Stop 1
Zaanse Schans
About 1.5 hours
An open-air neighbourhood on the river Zaan where working windmills, traditional green wooden houses and craft workshops sit side by side. You can walk freely through much of the village; individual windmills, museums and workshops have their own admission fees, so you decide what you want to go inside.
Stop 2
Volendam
About 1.5 hours, with time for lunch
Volendam was a working fishing village on the Markermeer and still feels like one around the harbour. Walk the dike promenade, look at the old boats, and try fresh fish at a local eatery (lunch is not included). The Volendam Museum and the traditional-costume photo studios are classic stops if you are curious about local culture.
Stop 3
Marken
About 1 hour
Marken was an island until a dike connected it to the mainland in 1957, and it has kept a character of its own. Wooden houses stand on small mounds, there is a quiet harbour, and the lighthouse known as the Horse of Marken watches over the water. After the bustle of Volendam it is the place to slow down and take your time.
