How to Get From Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans
Published

Zaanse Schans is a living heritage village on the Zaan river, just north of Amsterdam, with working windmills, wooden houses, museums and craft workshops. It is easy to reach from the city by bus, train, car or bike. This guide follows the official Zaanse Schans visitor information (checked on 29 October 2026), so always confirm current timetables before you go.
By bus
The Zaanse Schans Express, route 800, runs from Amsterdam Central Station to Zaanse Schans in around 24 minutes. According to the official website it runs every 15 minutes between 9:00 and 17:00. The meerplus route 801 also serves Zaanse Schans via Zaandam and continues to Volendam. The bus stop is directly beside the Zaans Museum.
By train
The nearest railway station is Zaandijk – Zaanse Schans. From Amsterdam Central Station the local train reaches it in around 17 minutes, and from there it is approximately a 15-minute walk to the windmills. Check the NS journey planner or 9292.nl for the current situation on the tracks.
By car
If you drive, enter Schansend 7 in Zaandam in your GPS. The official site points out that parking at and around Zaanse Schans is limited and paid, and asks visitors not to park outside the parking area or along the road. For that reason it recommends public transport where possible.
By bike
Zaanse Schans can also be reached by bike. A bicycle path runs along and across part of the site, but cycling on the narrow paths between the houses is not permitted, so use the bike racks in the large parking area.
Public transport or a private tour?
Public transport is a good, low-cost way to see Zaanse Schans if you want a few hours on your own. A private tour makes sense if you would rather not plan connections, want to combine more than one place in a day, or are travelling with children or limited time. With Mike you are picked up at your hotel or accommodation in Amsterdam in a Tesla Model Y Premium Long Range, there are no timetables to follow, and parking fees are included. Up to four guests, English or Dutch.
- For a few hours at the windmills, see the private half-day windmill tour (4 hours, €295 per group of up to 4 guests).
- For a full day with windmills, Volendam and Castle de Haar, see the private Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Castle de Haar tour (Castle de Haar admission tickets, lunch and tips are not included).
- For a shorter visit you can design your own private tour: from €240 per group (€80 per hour for 3 hours, starting 08:00 or 12:00; €295 for 4 hours (also 08:00 or 12:00), €60 per hour from 5 hours).
