Windmills along the water at Zaanse Schans

Last checked: 29 October 2026

Yes, Zaanse Schans is free to enter. You can walk around the whole area, see the workshops and enjoy the windmills from the outside without paying anything. The only thing that costs money is going inside a windmill: €7.50 per person, paid on the spot. Parking is also paid.

Hi, I'm Mike. I'm an official tour guide with 7 years of experience, and I take guests to Zaanse Schans all the time. The "do I need tickets?" question comes up before almost every tour, so here is the honest breakdown.

Is it free to enter Zaanse Schans?

Yes. There is no entrance fee for Zaanse Schans. You can simply arrive and walk around. The workshops and everything else you see there are free to visit too, so you can take your time, take your photos and wander at your own pace.

That also means that when you search for "Zaanse Schans entrance fee" or "Zaanse Schans tickets", the answer for just being there is simple: you don't need either.

What does a windmill cost?

This is the one thing that costs money. If you want to go inside a windmill, it is €7.50 per person. You pay on the spot, so there is nothing to book ahead.

Most visitors go inside just one windmill, and that is plenty. The others are just as lovely to see from the outside.

Prices can change, so please check the official Zaanse Schans website for current prices before you go.

Is parking free at Zaanse Schans?

No. Parking at and around Zaanse Schans is limited and paid, according to the official Zaanse Schans website (I checked on 29 October 2026). If you are driving yourself, plan for that.

If you come on one of my private tours, parking fees are included in the tour price. One less thing to think about.

What's free and what costs money?

  • Entering and walking around Zaanse Schans: free
  • The workshops and everything else there: free
  • Going inside a windmill: €7.50 per person (paid on the spot)
  • Parking: paid and limited (see the official site for rates)
  • Parking on my private tours: included

Is it worth paying to go inside a mill?

It's your call, and it's optional. Walking around is free, and plenty of guests are completely happy seeing the windmills from the outside and enjoying the atmosphere.

If you are curious what a working windmill looks like on the inside, €7.50 per person is a small extra. A tip from experience: decide before you arrive, and budget for it if you want it. It is common to go inside just one windmill. On my tours the mill entry is never included in the price, so you can choose on the day whether it is something you want.

If you want to know more about the mills in the region, have a look at my guide to a windmill tour from Amsterdam.

Do I need tickets in advance?

Not for walking around. You don't need a ticket to enter Zaanse Schans. If you decide to go inside a windmill, you pay for that on the spot.
